install timer switch for bathroom?
hi, i want to replace my current regular switch (which controls the sconce lights and a fan in the same switch) with a timer switch like this one: http://www.amazon.com/Leviton-6515M-W-2-5-10-15-Minutes-Buttons/dp/B0007NOZEC
right now, there are 2 black wires connected to the old switch. the ground wires and neutral wires are just spliced together and tucked in the box. the timer switch instruction says connect the black to the hot, the red to the load, the white to the neutrals, the green to the ground. i did that, but for some reason, i was only able to control the fan, not the lights. i tried disconnect and reconnect several times, still didn't work. anyone know why? also, my house has aluminum wires, i wonder if there's anything to do with the problem i am having.
the lights have CFL bulbs...i wonder if timer switches doesn't work well with CFL. will try with regular bulbs tomorrow...
you need a meter is one of the two black wire's on each side of the switch?...see the fan and light both need to be switched from that place now the power or "hot" may be supplied to the light first then the fan and the switch interrupts the circuit but most likely the hot goes to the switch first then it connects the circuit you need yo find the constant hot wire it is probably one of the black in the switch. there should be 3 sets of wires in the switch box one from the breaker or constant hot, and one for the light and then one for the fan if there is only 2 sets of wires its probably still constant hot and then the fan/light and they are wired together except you say that the light worked and not the fan? so did you hook up both blacks to the switch? Kinda need more information to help you better try the meeter and find the hot wire.
