CFL bulb application question/what is right, what is wrong?
Allot of confusion among users, most common question has to do with timers. Although it is stated on cartons tht you cannot use these bulbs on timers.....the information has to do with timers other than clock type. I know many people that use a clock type timer to turn a lamp with a cfl bulb on each night and off a few hours later and they have had no problem. I have contacted both GE and Sylvania and get no response from them.
Anyone have a feel for what is right or wrong, I am not sure what a clock timer would do that could affect a bulb. Some also think you cannot put cfl bulbs in fixtures where the base is at the top and the bulb part on the bottom......sconces for example. I just cannot seem to get clarification on such simple applications.
Some electronic type timers are not compatible with fluorescent bulbs but contact (your clock) type are ok. It's not the bulb itself but because it's load is inductive instead of resistive (like incandescent bulbs) things like regular dimmers and electronic timers has problems with it.
CFL's can be mounted in any position unless it is specific stated on the bulb that it cannot. And outside use is ok as long as it's inside some type of enclosure.
